The Wii U original had perhaps the best graphics on that platform, and with the Switch's extra power, things have been amped up just that little bit extra: higher quality shaders, more pixels, and better texture resolution make this game sing on either a TV or the Switch's marvelous built-in screen.
It's refreshing to play a game that uses both orchestral, "real" music, with sophisticated melodic compositions, and Mario Kart 8 delivers just that. The game's sound effects pop out of the Switch's built-in speakers!
The biggest flaw with Mario Kart 8 involved its lack of a good battle mode-- a series staple! Thankfully, this revised edition contains just that. This reviewer cringed when he saw that there were
several battle sub-modes, but as it turns out, there are unexpectedly all fun!
The frenetic "get hit by several objects three feet from the finish line and lose", blood pressure-raising gameplay of the original is still here, but it's mitigated somewhat by the ability to carry
two items. All of the Wii U version's DLC is here as well, making this the definite version of the game.
