Cartoon Cartoon! Johnny Bravo, Courage the cowardly Dog, Cow & Chicken, ed+edd&eddy and even Sheep make up the core of this racing game. This may seem like the B-Rank crew of the cartoon network lineup, but you'd be wrong. Cartoon Network Speedway is a fast enigmatic racing game with some EXTREME rubber banding. The early cartoon network lineup is here in a big way, from race tracks to characters to powerups, shenanigans are most definitely abound! You have the choice of 6 characters from the start. By playing through the 'Challenge' mode you can unlock more characters as well as more race tracks. There are 6 unlockable extra racers in challenge mode. There's also 'Championship' mode that plays more akin to a mario kart title. 4-races back to back and whoever scores the most placement points wins. By beating tournaments you can unlock extra weapons and stuff. Where do you get these weapons you ask? Well, much like mario kart, weapons obtained from gift boxes scattered around the track at regular intervals. In other words you win tournaments to make the game more chaotic! Who doesn't love picking up a Wiener Missile x3? The gameplay of this one is a bit awkward due to the EXTREME rubber banding. For starters, it's a 2-way rubber banding. That means if you're really far behind, you can make up the distance pretty fast. It also means that no matter how fast you go, if you stop for half a second then you'll be passed in another half a second. This can sometimes be an issue because there are also these star collectibles in each level. Each level has 5 stars. These stars give massive bonus points which are straight up required for some Challenge Levels and unlockables. To make matters worse or better depending how you look at it, there are also these bubble nuts powerups. I'm not sure how to explain it but they look like a nut encased in a bubble and picking it up will make your arch-nemesis's photo appear on the left side of the screen. Additionally after picking up the bubble nut, your speed greatly increases and tons of little red star dots appear around your character. This powerup seems to last for a very lengthy chunk of time. Not only that, but somehow it effects the scoring. I learned that the later levels you basically need to skip the stars early on to get the bubble nut before picking them up later. There's some sort of multiplier at play with these things. This game features one thing I really like and hate at the same time. Free Movement. This is to say that you can go off road with little to no side effects. It's maybe a 10% speed reduction at best. There are hard barriers of course and hazards, but generally speaking the style and gameplay because of this is very light-hearted and enjoyable. The soundtrack is also pretty good. Many of the levels have a hardline drumbeat that's very energetic. If anything I'd argue the game is possibly too easy because of it's rubber banding mechanic. Characters I used were Sheep, Plank, Super Cow, and Red Guy. This game favors speed, so Red Guy is clearly the best character. A great game if you want to relive a few memories from the early cartoon days while enjoying the dynamical racing genre. Credits in the Menu.
All in All, This fast paced shenanigans game received an 8.5 score for it's high energy gameplay. Star placement is sometimes off the beaten path. Bubble Nut Required sometimes. EXTREME 2-way Rubber Banding. Every song has a hardline drum beat(no sympathetic beats to calm the player).
