Review: Blue Stinger
Developer: Climax Graphics | Publisher: Activision Genre: Adventure/Shooter If you're into reading reviews (which you probably are if you're reading this), you'll already have formed the opinion that Blue Stinger sucks. This is definately NOT the case, as this game has a lot going for it, and I really believe that reviewers are missing the point of this game. The first thing reviewers tend to rip on is the camera. It is really not so bad at all. In fact, I think the camera is actually really well designed, and with some minute tweaking, could be called flawless. By "minute tweaking", I'm talking about little things, like how the camera starts above your character's head when you enter a room- annoying in rooms when there's also an enemy a few feet in front of the entrance to the room. But the camera tightly follows your character, and is very consistent, predictable, and thus very controllable, which is what a camera needs to be. The second thing reviewers rip on is the mood, mainly set by the bright graphics, and poor voice acting. The reviews say things like, "This game sucks compared to Resident Evil!" Blue Stinger is NOT Resident Evil, nor was it ever intended to be! It is a shooter with old school gameplay, and at that, it does very very well. Some things, like being able to buy guns out of vending machines, may not be realistic, but who cares? If the game is fun, nothing else matters; Blue Stinger is very fun, and addicting. As for the dynamics of the game, the plot is very good, the graphics are awesome (name a DC game that doesn't have awesome graphics though), the level design is great, the variety in weapons and powerups is unrivaled, the soundtrack is top-notch, and the action is fast and rewarding. This game has a lot going for it. On the downside, the voice acting is terrible, but once you get into the game, it's more amusing than detracting. Will you like Blue Stinger? Well, if you're looking for a fun launch title to play in between Soul Calibur matches and NFL2K confrontations, look no further. If you're hard-set on getting a dark, atmospheric, survival/horror game, and think Blue Stinger is the answer, you'll be sorely disappointed. But the average gamer will pump quite a few hours into Blue Stinger, and get a rewarding game experience in return.
