Editorial: My top-10 list
My favorite games of all time, in order of preference. Read: my favorite games. I don't think these are necessarily the best games of all time, they just happen to be my personal picks from my many years as a gamer. Got any comments? Just mail me. So, without further ado, here's the list:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991, Sega)
This Genesis game from the Sonic Team dominated my childhood. I still have the game memorized, evidence that I played the game daily as a kid :)

2. Toejam & Earl (1991, Sega)
Still a blast in 2 player, this is perhaps the most innovative game I've ever played, one of the best from the Genesis library. There's still nothing like it anywhere. Go download Kgen98 and try it out.

3. Star Control 2 (1992, Toys for Bob)
I didn't play this game until the 3DO version came out right around 1994. The gazillion hours of excellent voice acting in the 3DO port made an already A+++ game even better. Maybe the best game of all time...?

4. Quake (1995, id Software)
Sure, Wolf3d and Doom sucked away most of my life in grade school. But Quake introduced us all to online DM, and made the PC into an fps machine instead of an adventure machine. Quake defines the word "revolutionary."

5. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (1994, Capcom)
I've been an SF2 nut for as long as I can remember. But this arcade perfect port for the 3DO really hit home with me. The most scratched cd in my game collection, this one is WORN.

6. Guardian War (1994, Micro Cabin)
Equip your golems with 3 different bodies, charm monsters, create formations... one MASSIVE 3DO strategy-RPG. I love this game, played it more than any other RPG I've ever owned (that's a big statement!).

7. One Must Fall: 2097 (1994, Epic Megagames)
Outside of the Street Fighter 2 series, this is my favorite fighter of all time. And for the PC no less! I love it. Intuitive and revolutionary control, and MAN there aren't many things more fun than the Tournament mode (except sex maybe :P ).

8. Phantasy Star 2 (1989, Sega)
I grew up playing Sega's Genesis RPGs. In fact, I learned how to read from playing Sega's RPGs :) This was maybe their best RPG ever. Other notable works include Sword of Vermillion and Shining in the Darkness, those come close to this behemoth.

9. ZZT (1991, Epic Megagames)
Create your own games, make just about anything using a built in object-oriented programming language. Megazeux took it to the next level, but ZZT started the game maker concept. Go Tim Sweeney!

10. Xenogears (1998, Squaresoft)
Not only the best RPG I've ever played (much less the best RPG on the PSX) in terms of depth of story, but the game that gave me this brainstorm: with good enough writers, video games have more potential than either novels or movies for drawing someone into a story. Interesting, eh? I thought so :)
